The first project of the new (academic) year: Postage Stamps.

The project itself is actually a negotiated brief, where we can choose from several different briefs provided by the RSA, and so I chose ‘Postage Stamps’. The idea of the brief is to create six new stamps that create awareness about the environment, and things that are and/or can be done to help the planet and conserve our energy resources. The initial presentation for it was yesterday, and so I’d say we’re a little under half way to the finishing point.

I like the idea I’m going with, but I’m not happy with the stamps design. I think I rushed them. But since the presentation I’ve come up with a new concept to work with, and I’m now currently working on these new designs. I’ve spent the majority of today playing in illustrator working on creating my own vectors for the designs. I’m getting there, but as always, it’s never as easy as it looks.

Rave on Air - Day Two

So Rave on Air 2008 is over. On the one hand I’m pleased; this project has been pretty tough and there’s been a lot of ups and downs. But then I guess that’s to be expected of any project, especially something that you’ve never done before. On the other hand it was great fun and a brilliant learning experience. It was something we’ve never done before, and it presented a great challenge. It’s opened my eyes to a lot of future possibilities and careers; it never hurts to branch out a little.

Today was the day of the Formative presentation. Based on the feedback, we’re on the right track, but have have some serious work to be geting on with.

We’e had some problems with getting the pressure mats organised, so as an alernative we are looking into new ways of presenting the project

1) on/off mats which trigger specific sections of the image, the layout of the project remains the same.

2) on/off mats hidden around the exhibition room. As a user accidentally steps on one, the animation plays.

The use of on/off mats will make the project a lot more straight forward to achieve, something which will be a major help considering the time left to us. Although it’s not exactly what we set out to do, it’s the only major compromise we’ve had to make. Presentation slides after the break.

On Monday was the presentation for the various ideas people had come up with. Around twenty to twenty five ideas were proposed, and then out of that number five projects were voted for. Those who’s ideas were voted for became team leaders, and those who remained were split up to become team members. My virtual earthquake concept was chosen, along with four other ideas including Frasers RC Snake idea and Craigs Shoutbox.

I will post more on the earthquake concept as well as the team that will be creating it at a later date (perhaps tomorrow). For now however, here are the slides used in the presentation of the Virtual Earthquake, as well as the Virtual Decorating (which was another proposed concept).

In preparation for a presentation of ideas - something that will most likely take place next Monday - two ideas need to be chosen and then explored in further depth as to how they will work and what tools will be needed to be able to implement them successfully in an interactive space.
